Key Keepers

A USPS key keeper is a secure device that allows postal carriers to access a locked building, gated community, or apartment complex so they can deliver mail without needing individual keys. Here's how it works:

1. Location & Purpose
   • It's usually mounted on the outside of a multi-tenant building or near a centralized mailbox area.
   • The device contains a special compartment that holds a master key for that property (often called a building entry key or lobby door key).
2. USPS Arrow Lock
   • The key keeper is secured with a USPS-controlled Arrow lock.
   • Only USPS mail carriers have the Arrow key, which is strictly controlled by the Postal Service.
3. Operation
   • The mail carrier inserts their Arrow key into the lock on the key keeper.
   • Turning the Arrow key opens the compartment, revealing the property's entry key.
   • The carrier removes the entry key and uses it to unlock the lobby, gate, or door to access the mailboxes inside.
4. Security Features
   • Once the carrier returns the entry key to the compartment and closes it, the Arrow lock secures the key keeper again.
   • Residents, building management, or anyone without the Arrow key cannot open it.
   • USPS regulations prohibit duplication or use of the Arrow key outside of official mail delivery.
5. Usage Scenario
   • Example: In an apartment building, the mail carrier arrives, opens the key keeper with the Arrow key, retrieves the lobby door key, enters the building, delivers the mail, then returns the lobby key and locks the key keeper back up.
